Below are simple applique techniques. I found these on p. 40 in the book sew me! sewing home decor by Choly Knight.
Adhesive method
Use two-sided fusible web as if it were an iron-on patch.
- Fusible web: Heavy duty
- Stitch: None
- Fabric: Felt
- Good for projects that won’t be washed often
Floating method
Only a small section of the fabric is sewn down. Fabric will have free floating edges. Sewn down the center or near the edges of the applique.
- Fusible web: None
- Stitch: Straight
- Fabric: Felt
Straight stitch method
Use fusible web to adhere applique, then stitch around the edges with a regular straight stitch 1/8″ from edge.
- Fusible web: Light
- Stitch: Straight
- Fabric: Felt
Zigzag method
Use fusible web to adhere applique, then stitch around the edges with a zigzag stitch. Length: 0.75-1.25. Width: 2-4.5. Zig zag stitch will cover all the raw edges.
- Fusible web: Light
- Stitch: Zigzag
- Fabric: Felt or cotton
Satin stitch method
Use a very short zigzag stitch (typically shortest your machine can handle) to fully encase raw edges.
- Fusible web: Medium
- Stitch: Zigzag
- Fabric: Felt or cotton
- Embroidery thread may be best with a complimentary color
- Different than zigzag method because it has little to no space in between the stitches
