Homemade cough drops are effectively candy. However, they have beneficial properties that are useful for soothing a stubborn cough, which is exactly what I was looking for. They are hard initially, but do become bendable and a bit more toffee-like the longer you suck on them. In this post, I’ll discuss the process of making honey ginger cough drops.
The honey ginger cough drops recipe
I came across a Youtube video that put a visual to this process. Below are the notes I made that I will continue to use in the future:
- The recipe below makes ~16 cough drops. This is a reasonable amount to make for a single batch.
- Coming to the rolling stage takes ~10-15 minutes over medium-low (3) heat.
- I add ground cloves, ground ginger, and cinnamon during cooking. This is because of their medicinal benefits, and it rounds out the flavor.
- Using a silicone mold is much easier than pouring into individual cough drops. This mixture cools very quickly and will become hard and unusable in a minute or less. The faster you put it into shapes the better off it will be.
- A mixture of cinnamon and tapioca starch works well for coating. I make sure each individual cough drop is coated, then shake off the excess with a fine mesh strainer.

Ingredients
- 1/4 c. honey
- 1 tsp. grated fresh ginger
- 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
- 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp. ground ginger
- 1/8 tsp. ground cloves
Instructions
- Grate ginger on a microplane. Add to a heavy-bottom pot, along with the remaining ingredients.
- Heat over medium-low (3), stirring constantly. Once at the hard crack stage, remove from heat. Pour into silicone molds and allow to cool.
Notes
Coat in a mixture of cinnamon and tapioca starch. Store in fridge.
